In 2009, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the University of Miami Health System welcomed Richard J. Cote, M.D., FRCPath, FCAP as the new Chairman for the Department of Pathology. He was also appointed Chief of Pathology for Jackson Memorial Hospital and will lead the University of Miami Biomedical Nanoscience Institute. Dr. Cote is a nationally recognized expert on the cellular and molecular markers of tumor progression in cancer patients with major research interests in the area of molecular biology of prostate and bladder cancer. He has long been involved in the development of new technology, most recently in the area of nanotechnology where Dr. Cote and his colleagues have designed and built novel diagnostic platforms for tumor cell capture and detection of biomarkers.
Dr. Hinrichs’ medical background includes board certification in anatomic and clinical pathology after completion of a residency at the University of California, Davis Medical Center. He obtained research training in molecular biology at the NIH and maintains an active research program in molecular pathogenesis related to infectious disease. One component of the work focuses on antibiotic resistance mechanisms in level A or select organisms. Dr. Hinrichs has published over 150 papers in basic science and medical journal. He is a member of the CDC National Biosurveillance Advisory Subcommittee. Dr. Hinrichs’ research program is focused on two major topics including improved diagnostics for category A and B high risk organisms, and pathogenesis of influenza and infectious agents transmitted through aerosols. Several new assays have been developed for Francisella tularensis, Yersinia pestis and Burkholderia species. Aerosolized pathogen studies have identified new approaches for vaccine development.
